Talk about how music has influenced you in your daily living.
For me, Music is needed every moment of my life. The emotion, passion, and drive that music gives me, (especially the rock & Metal genre) helps me get through the day and it inspires me and motivates me. I NEED music!
Where do you each find yourself listening to music most often?
Spotify is my go-to, being that I am on the go, I stay moving and my phone is always on me so Spotify is what I like!
What are your favorite brands to use when it comes to the instruments, mics, amps,
pedals, and so on? Why do you favor them?
Being that I have performed in a few bands and have a studio (Renewing Music Studios) I tend to experiment with Different kinds of Equipment and products. I like Mogami Cables, Peavey & EVH Amps, Mesa Cabs, Universal Audio Recording Equipment, D'Addario Bass strings, Kalium Guitar Strings, Dunlop Picks & Guitar maintenance products. I still like to try new things and experiment but those products are a go-to for me for quality and durability.
Talk about your current project. Its conception. How it evolved. The storyline behind its development or any anecdotes that may have occurred during the writing/recording process?
Created after the disbanding of my first band, I Prayed For An Afterlife (2013) I (Rob Volkoff) ventured to record and produce his own music. Performing and recording in numerous projects over the years (Countermeasures, O, House of Jacob, Patheos, Discerner), the process of releasing the debut EP, Launching From Ground Zero will be releasing singles (debut single "By Faith" released May 15th) throughout the summer of 2020 with Ep release fall 2020. The vision of this project was conceptualized in 2008 when I first started playing music & was looking to be in bands! Songs were written, music was being made but my life took a different path - only it to return to this! This EP encompasses the concept of a person who has struggled in life and has formed opinions, thoughts, and feelings that have affected the person's life negatively. This song, along with the concept of the whole EP, is a journey of reflecting throughout all of life's experiences to discover and bring into fruition some of the lessons on how a person can find and truly possess faith - to grow, evolve and become a person with purpose.
Were there any conflicts during the recording process?
While Life Renewed is my passion project, I still love to perform music and play shows so during the process of learning to record & writing this Ep, The demos would get attention and open opportunities to perform in bands so there were many times that I needed to shelf Life Renewed to focus my energy, time and honestly finances in the performing project I would join. Now in 2020, I have learned the lessons throughout the past 10 years of being in the music scene (with the addition of being more financially stable) that I can apply to finally releasing my own music in 2020 and beyond.
Is there a particular part you enjoy more than another in the process of a project?
I would say, creating music is my favorite thing part of my journey as a musician. Which is why I started learning how to record, I am able to come up with ideas to keep growing and evolving a song at my time and patience. Nothing compares to listening back to a song that took so much time and energy and have it play in your headphones or speakers. Performing it would also be the next thing I enjoy. The minutes on stage are the best minutes of my life.
How do you know when a song is done and ready to be taken to the recording studio and produced?
Having my own studio (Renewing Music Studios) it helps that I do all my pre-production for Life Renewed (or any project that I'm involved with) and really get the most out of the song before going into a studio. I try to remember as an artist I can get too involved and subjective of the song and not consider what the song needs or what my original objective with the music I created was based on. For Life Renewed Specifically, I am still learning a proper workflow because I tend to write, record, and produce all at the same time and don't focus on parts at a time - since I record myself.
Looking towards the short and long term of where you might be currently-where do you see yourself (yourselves) as an artist/band in 2020 and beyond?
I cannot speak on behalf of the bands I am in but I can say the future is promising for Life Renewed and other projects, I have spent the past 6 years writing so much music that I have PLENTY of content that if you are a Rock & Metal lover - you will want to keep on the lookout, I have something for everyone!
